From the Mayor - 28 July 2021
The one-month lockdown extension in Greater Sydney was not an unexpected announcement, given the concerning increases in community infection rates. The extended lockdown will be challenging, and I acknowledge the rising anguish, business insecurity and escalating levels of pandemic fatigue as communities struggle to contain the Delta variant. Getting vaccinated is the key to our way out of this pandemic and I urge residents to get vaccinated and diligently continue to consistently follow all public health orders.
Never before has the need for consistent, strong leadership been more critical. Council is regularly reviewing its community support measures and will continue to do everything possible to support our residents.
On Tuesday, the Mosman and Neutral Bay Chambers of Commerce hosted a forum attended by 89 local business owners which provided a much needed opportunity for questions to be asked directly to the NSW Minister for Finance and Small Business and the Small Business Commissioner. I encourage the Chamber to continue regular online meetings with members as the next few months will be very challenging for business survival and providing a supportive environment is both essential and necessary. Can I again thank residents who continue to ‘Think Mosman First’ and actively support our local businesses when it comes to essential shopping and online purchasing.
In other news, the local government elections due to be held on 4 September have been postponed until Saturday 4 December. This announcement was also not surprising and Council has quickly adapted by continuing to provide stable, steady leadership until the new Council is appointed. I also want to especially acknowledge Council staff who are doing everything possible during this challenging lockdown period to deliver the best possible customer service and care of our most vulnerable residents.
In closing, the Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide wonderful relief as we all experience the joy and heartache of watching our dedicated and committed athletes compete against the very best in the world. Good luck to every member of both teams and thank you for being such wonderful role models for our younger citizens.
